Why cucumber is great for your health

Stock up on this modest veggie and boost your brain power, feel revitalised and benefit from heaps of health benefits.

Natural electrolytes

Instead of reaching for that neon coloured fizzy drink to re-fuel after your run, opt for cucumber slices in water to restore your electrolytes. Not only will it keep you refreshed, it's completely additive free.

Cucumbers are also rich in potassium, which helps to counter the effects of sodium and reduce blood pressure, and if you want be even healthier with your newfound post-run snack, opt for organic.

Boost your brain health

Not only are cucumbers tasty, they’re one of the best veggies out there for brain health. Rich in the anti-inflammatory flavonol fisetin, research suggests that eating more cucumbers can actually protect against progressive memory loss and brain function.

The Alzeihmer's Drug Discovery Foundation suggest that fisetin may well strengthen the connections between brain cells and in turn enhance memory. So, what are you waiting for? Get munching on the green stuff!

Instant hydration

Within that peculiar green exterior, cucumber is filled to the brim with water - 90 per cent in fact. Instead of reaching for a sugary soft-drink when the heat hits, re-hydrate with a refreshing cucumber and feed your body with all-natural goodness.

Stress relief

In the hustle and bustle of every day life, it's welcome news that this magical vegetable contains vitamin B1 or thiamine, more commonly known as the stress relieving vitamin.

According to The University of Maryland Medical Centre, thiamine is often known for its anti-stress qualities because it strengthens the immune system and can improve the body's ability to withstand stressful conditions. The next time you feel yourself getting panicked, reach for a cucumber and a tub of hummus and let your worries melt away.

Good for digestion

An unhappy stomach is just one of the signs that your body needs some TLC. Luckily for us cucumber can help keep our digestive system on the right track, as cucumber skin contains an insoluble fibre that moves food through your digestive tract at a faster speed. As runners who like to eat a lot, this is wonderful news and another excuse to get the crudités and dip on the go. Just refrain from peeling your cucumber to get the best out of its skin.
