4 things you should do when you get out of bed

We know you’re probably desperate to get your running shoes on and hit the road as soon as you get out of bed in the mornings, but here are four other things you should be doing too, for optimum health and wellbeing.

4 things you should do when you get out of bed

Drink plenty of water

Drinking water in the morning has been proven to have great health benefits. 70 per cent of the human body content is water, so it plays an important role in the proper functioning of the body. Drinking two to three glasses of water first thing in the morning before consuming anything else is a great way to purify your internal system and allow for better absorption of nutrients throughout your day.

At first, you may find it hard to drink that much first thing, but it gets easier as your body gradually becomes accustomed to the routine.

8 minutes of exercise

Getting your heart rate going in the morning is a great way to wake your mind and body up. If it’s not a run day, or if you usually run later in the day, your morning exercise does not need to be a high-intensity workout: a light session lasting around eight minutes will create movement to give your body the energy it needs.

2 minutes of stretching

After getting your heart rate up, it's important to let your body adjust to a resting rate, in order to prepare for the day ahead. Two minutes of stretching a day will not only improve your flexibility, but will also make you feel more relaxed and less prone to injury.

Stop for 5 minutes

A lot of people make the mistake of thinking that, in order to meditate, you have to sit in silence for an hour, but this is not the case. By simply taking five minutes out of your morning to sit in silence, you will start your day off with a clear head.

Having 5 minutes to yourself every day in calming surroundings will allow you to create a clear mindset and understand better the day ahead. This is all about focusing on the day, in order to boost your mood and create a positive mental outlook.
